Frequently Asked Questions
Can whiplash bring on arthritis?
Whiplash damages the soft tissue around the spine. The bones, called vertebrae, can often begin to move too much due to the instability from the soft tissue damage. As the vertebrae move around, this can lead to the development of arthritis.
Can whiplash cause long-term headaches?
Whiplash can lead to chronic headaches. This is why it is so important to be evaluated by a chiropractor soon after your accident.
What joints are affected by whiplash?
All of the joints of the spine are affected by whiplash. This includes facet joints, discs, and uncovertebral joints, all of which can cause pain.
Can a car accident cause arthritis in your neck?
A car accident may lead to arthritis in your neck later in life. It takes years for arthritis to develop after an injury.
Can a chiropractor help with arthritis in the neck?
Regular chiropractic care is one of the best treatments for arthritis in the neck. Chiropractic adjustments help restore motion to arthritic joints, alleviating pain and slowing down the wear and tear process.

Hello everyone, I'm Dr. Aaron Seaton with The Chiropractic Place. And today's video is about whiplash and arthritis. So whiplash, we know is associated with arthritis, but a lot of people don't really understand, well, how does this lead to it? And so what happens is in whiplash injuries, people are, most of the time, they're caught off guard, they're hit, their head gets thrown forward and back, and that can cause damage to the ligaments and the tendons around the spine that hold things in place. And from that damage, if there's permanent damage to these areas, the body starts to respond by growing more bone in the vertebrae, which is the formation of arthritis. But one whiplash incident can actually accelerate arthritis by up to 10 years. It could show up 10 years earlier than you would normally find in somebody who hasn't had a whiplash injury. So it really predisposes people to develop arthritis at much younger ages. So it's very important in this situation, when you think about this, to remember to get care. When you've had a whiplash injury, get to the chiropractor, assess, and start care early.
Don't wait months and months because this is what can happen if you do that. The other thing is that 80% of whiplash people develop cervicogenic headaches. That's a huge number of patients that are developing headaches that are coming from the neck because of the whiplash injury. So if you've had some neck pain, some headaches, even if you've had a whiplash injury years in the past, these are signs that you need to be taking care of that injury, even if it's been years. It's important to see the chiropractor and get your chiropractic adjustments to help with that neck pain, help with that potential arthritis, and help with the headaches that you can develop from these injuries. So if you have any questions regarding whiplash, spinal trauma, neck pain, or headaches like this, please give our office a call. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have.
